Thomas Smith Waring was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1832. He graduated from the College of Charleston in 1851, and from the Medical College of the State of South Carolina in 1853. Dr. Waring served in the South Carolina Cavalry of the Confederate Army during the Civil War, and was wounded twice in battle. Dr. Waring received a promotion for his bravery on the battlefield.
